Paula Modersohn-Becker in Hanover

October 27.10.2023, 25.2.2024 to February 20.10.2024, XNUMX (extended until October XNUMX, XNUMX)

Paula Modersohn-Becker is a pioneer of German modernism. The painter is one of the most important artists of the time around 1900, not only in Germany, but also in Europe and worldwide. She was the first German Expressionist - even before the foundation of the Dresden Bridge in 1905 and the Munich Blue Rider in 1908. In terms of social and emancipation history, she occupies an outstanding position and is exemplary for her gender.

The Hanover State Museum currently holds 39 paintings by Paula Modersohn-Becker - the largest collection in the world outside of Bremen. Proof that the artist was discovered very early in Hanover and collected intensively. The local Modersohn-Becker collection impresses with internationally known major works such as the “Self-Portrait with Hand on Chin,” but also with an impressive variety of topics. It includes works from the artist's entire creative process: everything from landscape paintings to still lifes and depictions of women and children - a particular specialty of Modersohn-Becker - is represented. For the first time, all of the artist's Hanover works are to be presented to the public in an exhibition.

new loans in the special exhibition

The first Paula Modersohn Becker retrospective in the United States of America opens on June 6.6.2024, 2024. It will first be presented in the Neue Galerie New York, then the equally renowned Art Institute Chicago will show the large-scale show from October XNUMX. Pictures from the Hanover collection are indispensable: five paintings from the exhibition “I will do something else. Paula Modersohn-Becker in Hanover« travels to the USA.

The Hanover pictures will now significantly establish and promote the artist's global reputation outside of Europe, and will carry the fame of the painter from the Lower Saxony village of Worpswede into the world. The resulting gaps were closed with the support of generous loans – particularly from the Ahlers collection. Thanks to the five oil paintings that show Paula Modersohn-Becker's special affinity for the painting motifs "Birches" and "Girls", the very well-attended exhibition gains new accents in its extended duration and expands the view of Paula Modersohn-Becker's entire oeuvre.

These paintings are part of the retrospective:
