concentration camp survived

Portraits by Stefan Hanke

25.10.2024 – 2.2.2025

As contemporary witnesses to the Nazi crimes, the survivors of the concentration and extermination camps with their different biographies are the focus of the work of the Regensburg photographer Stefan Hanke. In cooperation with Villa Seligmann, the Hanover State Museum presents over 60 impressive black and white portraits and invites viewers to a lasting encounter with extraordinary people.

Without any preconceived victim template, Hanke portrays people from all persecuted groups that are still accessible and from a total of seven countries. The expressive photographs show the protagonists in their respective living environments or in places where they were persecuted and imprisoned in camps. Surprising statements in the form of quotes and unexpected historical references give personal lives and sufferings their own face and enable special access to the story(s) surrounding one of humanity's greatest catastrophes.
