tempo. tempo! tempo?

a story of speed

9.6.2023 – 4.2.2024

Higher - faster - further: Humans have always strived to overcome the limits of speed. His inventive spirit helps him in this. Thanks to animal support and mechanical finesse, he can keep increasing his pace. Despite physical disadvantages, he triumphs in the hunt, in sporting competitions or in military conflicts.

Thanks to its diverse collection, the Landesmuseum Hannover is able to illuminate this human striving for speed from different perspectives. Archaeological finds and ethnological objects demonstrate human ingenuity - across time, space and a wide variety of cultures. Paintings capture breakthroughs and their impact on our world in oil. And natural history not only provides the models that human innovations are based on – it also offers some impressive counter-examples that make it clear that speed is not always the best survival strategy.

three exhibition locations - one topic

The Landesmuseum Hannover is not the only exhibition venue dedicated entirely to speed this year. In a unique cooperation For the first time, three outstanding and nationally respected, but at the same time fundamentally different museums in Lower Saxony have joined forces to illuminate this special topic in all its facets: in addition to the largest Lower Saxony state museum in Hanover, the world's largest private collection of contemporary art is also in the Kunstmuseum Schloss Derneburg and the largest Vintage car museum of Europe, the PS.SPEICHER in Einbeck is part of the party. They are lined up along the A7, Germany's central north-south axis. It also connects the Leinetal, which invites you to go on excursions.

art museum castle derneburg

The Art Museum Schloss Derneburg presents exhibitions of contemporary art in a unique historic setting and is a seat of the Hall Art Foundation. For around thirty years, Schloss Derneburg was the residence and studio of the artist Georg Baselitz before it was converted into one of the largest privately owned public museums of contemporary art in Europe.

Interpreting Tempo as a study of the speed at which something moves or functions has intriguing implications for design, transportation, commerce, technology, war, and information. Contemporary artists have dealt with these themes in different ways and in different media. The participation of the Kunstmuseum Schloss Derneburg in the exhibition »Tempo. Tempo! Tempo?” will explore the concept of “speed” through multiple thematic lenses and is drawn entirely from the Hall Collection. Around 60 works by 35 international artists from the fields of painting, sculpture, photography and new media will be shown in the converted granary on the domain.

ps.memory Einbeck

With around 2.500 exhibits, the PS.SPEICHER in Einbeck as the largest accessible classic car collection in Europe. Motorcycles, automobiles, small and micro cars, trucks, Lanz Bulldogs and agricultural machinery are on display in a historic granary and four adjoining show depots in the city area.

The special exhibition highlights three different subject areas: First, the technical effort to achieve speed is presented in consideration of running stability, comfort and safety. This subject area explains to visitors how high the (individual) pace was before industrialization. Among other things, the oldest speeding ticket in the world, issued for speeding, can be seen in the »Intoxication of Speed« theme area. The current discussions on the topic of speed limits are taken up and critically examined and information is given about the supposed effects of speed on the human physique. »Space and Time« sheds light on life and technical developments, which are characterized by an increasingly fast pace.
