natural history society
In 1797, 27 citizens of Hanover founded a reading society, from which the Natural History Society of Hanover (NGH) emerged in 1801. It is the second oldest scientific association in Germany with around 500 members. Its aim was and is to promote and disseminate knowledge of nature in an appropriate manner, particularly through publications, excursions and lectures on topics from geology, paleontology, botany, zoology, physiology and history. The construction of the Museum of Art and Science (today the Künstlerhaus) was initiated by the NGH. She was also a founding member of the Lower Saxony State Museum in Hanover, the Zoological Garden and the Lower Saxony Local History Association.
