naked and bare

lovis corinth and the nudes around 1900

26.2. to 11.6.2017

The nude - hardly any other motif is so central to Lovis Corinth's work. The artist shows the naked human body in a wide variety of variations: from the model study in the studio to the ironic look at ancient myths to sensual and intimate scenes.

With high-ranking works from the Landesmuseum's collection, some of which have never been shown before, supplemented by selected loans, an exhibition shed light on the Corinth files in the context of their time for the first time. A juxtaposition with works by contemporaries such as Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Max Slevogt or Paula Modersohn-Becker revealed an era in upheaval: between art tradition and the beginning of modernity, between prudery and the emerging nudist movement.
